A new study by Recurrent has revealed that extreme heat can significantly reduce the range of electric vehicles (EVs). Under normal summer conditions with temperatures below 90F (32C), EVs typically lose only 2-5% of their range due to their robust thermal management systems. However, as temperatures rise above 95F (35C), the range loss can increase dramatically to 20-30%. This considerable reduction occurs because the car’s thermal management system needs more energy to keep the battery cool, thus decreasing the vehicle’s overall range.
Certain behaviors exacerbate the impact of heat on EVs. Leaving the battery at a low charge makes it harder for the car to manage temperature, while parking in direct sunlight for prolonged periods further stresses the battery.
