A review by the Daily Caller News Foundation has revealed that the U.S. subsidiary of Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD and its top executive, Stella Li, have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to Democratic candidates and organizations over recent years. Notably, BYD and Li donated over $40,000 to the Democratic National Committee between 2020 and 2023 and over $30,000 to groups supporting President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. California Governor Gavin Newsom received about $60,000 from BYD and Li between 2018 and 2023, drawing scrutiny for awarding BYD a $1 billion no-bid contract for protective equipment during the pandemic. Other notable beneficiaries include former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the California Democratic Party, and former Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Michael Anotovich.
BYD’s involvement in U.S. politics comes amid rising security concerns, leading Congress to ban the Pentagon from purchasing BYD batteries due to potential risks. Despite these concerns, BYD has continued to expand its influence globally, leveraging China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The company has also been highlighted in National Defense Authorization Acts, with provisions banning public funds from supporting China-linked transportation firms like BYD. The company’s strategy appears to be targeting future U.S. market entry via Mexico, especially as new EPA tailpipe emissions standards might benefit its electric trucks and buses. Various officials and organizations linked to BYD’s donations did not respond to requests for comment.
